October Door Decor!

23 October 2018
I had such a blast creating a fun decorative door last month that I just had to do it again for October!  After a bit of brainstorming, cutting, rearranging, and gluing, here is the finished product!

My students each created their own darling little pumpkin for the door.  They LOVED contributing and I love how each one is totally unique and reflects their big personalities!

I've compiled everything that you need to make your own October door.  I get so many compliments on this and I know that you will too!  The packet includes the font and clipart templates, as well as detailed directions to help you make your own masterpiece.  It really isn't hard at all, and you will love the finished product!

You can get this door decor kit by clicking the link below.  Keep an eye out for more kits coming soon!  I have something REALLY cute in mind for November so make sure you follow along and subscribe so you don't miss out!

Halloween Classroom Party Kit

09 October 2018
Halloween is just around the corner and that means it is time for our first classroom party!  My first graders are already building up excitement and, with such enthusiastic anticipation, I do not want our party to be a flop!  My room parents usually run the show (bless them), but I like to give them tips about having a successful party.  Stations are a must!  Having students in small groups that rotate around to different activities (led by a parent volunteer) ensure that everyone knows what is going on and is having a good time.

I'm excited to share with you today a little something that will make your party planning super easy this year!  I have created a brand new packet, a Classroom Halloween Party Kit, with all of the materials and directions that you (or your volunteers) need to throw a successful and fabulous party.  The prep isn't time-consuming, and the activities are varied and super fun!  Here's a closer look at what you will find in this party kit:

PARTY PREP
This section includes an invitation you can customize, volunteer sign-ups, materials checklist, and thank you notes for your volunteers.

CLASSROOM DECORATIONS
This section includes a darling bunting, door decoration, and various Halloween accents to get the environment just right for your party.

STATION ACTIVITIES
This section includes a bunch of engaging, yet simple-to-prep stations.  Choose as many as you need, I promise your kids will love them!

As you can see, this packet is full of really awesome resources to help make your classroom Halloween party a fabulous success!  This packet will be on sale throughout the rest of the week, so make sure you grab one quickly!

Happy Teaching!

The Very Best Halloween Read Alouds

10 October 2017

One of my favorite things to do with my students is enjoy quality books together, especially picture books.  When the perfect combination of illustration and text finds its way into my classroom magical things happen.  Here are my top ten Halloween picture books that we enjoy all month long in my classroom.  Some are old, some are new, every one is fabulous.

1. Big Pumpkin (1995)
This is my all-time favorite!  Tells the story of a witch wanting to make pumpkin pie on Halloween night.  She has a little trouble getting the pumpkin off the vine and a few creepy friends are enlisted to help in the cause.  A fabulous musical recording of this book is also out there (here).

This is a classic and one students always enjoy.  The little old lady is walking through her forest when she sees and hears some pretty scary things.  This read aloud can be very interactive if you make up actions and sounds to go with each of the objects the little old lady encounters.

3. Room on the Broom (2003)
This is from one of the greatest author/illustrator duos out there and is full of delightful rhyming.  A more lighthearted Halloween book, this story lends itself well to a discussion on plot sequence.  You can always follow up or do a compare/contrast with the movie too! A darling animated version of this is currently available on Netflix.

4. Runaway Pumpkin (2005)
A thumpin' bumpin' good book!  Buck and Billy Baxter and their little sister Lil accidentally send a giant pumpkin rolling down the hillside.  This book is full of delightful rhymes and is so fun to read aloud.  Also illustrated by S.D. Schindler (of Big Pumpkin fame,) this is a must-read for Halloween time!  In fact, I've read it three times already this month!

5. Popcorn (1979)
This may be lesser-known, but it has always been a favorite with my students.  Sam the Bear decides to have a Halloween party while his parents are out and things start popping out of control!  I love using this book to discuss story elements such as character, setting, problem, and solution.  Your students will be utterly engaged as they watch Sam's predicament unfold.

6. The Spider and the Fly (1829/2002)
I always look forward to reading this one to my students.  Most of them have not heard it before, though most adults would probably recognize this old poem.   "Will you walk into my parlor, said the spider to the fly..."  I love this 2002 edition because of the fantastic illustrations by Tony DiTerlizzi.  Spooky and detailed, your kids will be intrigued, if not a little bit spooked, by this book.

Okay, this book.  This is one that goes way back and I remember it being read to me when I was very little.  It has just the right amount of suspense and creepiness that keeps kiddos engaged (but not horrifically terrified).  Bonus points if you do a spooky voice for the ghost!

8. Creepy Carrots (2012)
I just read this book with my students today and, like The Teeny Tiny Woman, you've got a perfect blend of kid-appropriate suspense and creepiness.  This is great for exploring main idea, key details, asking and answering questions, and making predictions.  2013 Caldecott Medal winner, your kids will definitely love this one!  I promise.

One of my favorite things about this book is the illustrations.  They have a classic feel, but still maintain a unique and slightly sinister cuteness.  This book is fresh and fun and ties in the whole Halloween feel with a good message about gratitude and friendship.

10. Bone Soup (2008)
A fun take on the classic tale of Stone Soup, this awesome read aloud is definitely a crowd-pleaser amongst the kiddo set.  Finnigin the skeleton is known for his appetite and is in search of something to relinquish his hunger.  Witty and cute, make sure you check this one out!

Halloween Number Handwriting {FREEBIE!}

22 October 2015
Hey friends! I've noticed this interesting trend in my life. As my pregnant belly gets bigger my blogging gets more and more sparse. I'm doing my best, but, you know, what can you do? This precious little baby likes to sap mom's energy!

I'm excited today to share a fun little Halloween freebie that I hope can be useful to you. My kiddos always seem to need a little nudge or a bit of TLC when it comes to number formation.  We often overlook number formation what with the glaring light of correct letter formation in our faces, but both are important.  We want our students to be able to clearly convey the numerals that represent quantities.

SO, in an attempt to snatch some motivation out of the Halloween buzz running rampant in my school, I created this handwriting packet.  The pages run from 0-10 and include modeled formation, opportunities for independent practice, and images that convey quantity.

Click HERE or on any of the images to snag it for free!
Happy Halloween!

October Recap

29 November 2014
Hey, it’s me! I need to ask for your forgiveness for my absence of late!  We all know that life has a way of getting extremely busy at times.  My attention has been needed in other realms of my life (you know, like the laundry room), but I am happy to be back to share some of what we’ve been up to in first grade!

I like to keep this blog as a sort of virtual scrapbook of my teaching adventures and so I hope you don’t mind if I play catch-up for a bit.

In this post I will highlight some things we did in October and in the next I will highlight November.

We practiced skip counting with this pumpkin page from my Pumpkin Time packet.

We got out the glitter and made some spider webs.

We learned about spiders and put a cute little spider fact on our webs before hanging them in the hall to share what we had learned.

We had a pumpkin taste test party in which my kids sampled pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin seeds, and pure pumpkin (this kiddo licked his spoon clean!).

We collected some data to see which pumpkin foods was the favorite!

Wouldn't you know it?  Pumpkin seeds were the favorite!

The week of Halloween week was also our Red Ribbon Week.  The entire school let go of red balloons with a drug-free pledge attached to each.

Halloween was a high-energy all-day party!  My kids were so darling and we had such a great day.  We even got some learning done.  In the afternoon my room moms threw a great party for my kiddos and we enjoyed these darling monster donuts at the end!

Thanks for letting me catch up!  Stay tuned for November! :)

A Look at Halloween!

02 November 2013

Oh, Halloween!  I am happy to say that we all survived AND we all had a great time, including the teacher!  Everything went so well, only minimal amounts of sugar were consumed, my room moms planned a fantastically organized party, the kids were all smiles, and we even got some learning done! Allow me to share a few photos from the day...

Halloween is actually one of the reasons I feel so lucky to be an elementary school teacher!  Even with the stress, the headaches, the double Cherry Cokes, and the 12 hours of sleep I had to do afterwards...it is so exciting for our little friends!  These holidays just make so much sense when they are spent with children. Their smiles and enthusiasm make me love what I do!

Happy November!
